Keeping the eternal balance between Good and Evil is a rough job, but GrimFaeries love dirty work.
Hidden from mortal eyes, they walk quietly among us, delivering an instant death sentence to those who deserve it. As he patrols the shadows of Houston, Texas, Kane the Grim keeps his fangs sharp and his claws sharper. His true form hidden by an illusion, he protects the innocent from horrors they wouldn’t believe. His partner, Ariana, is a witch equally skilled with machine guns and magick spells. She’s never far away, and always ready to throw down alongside the Grim.
When an evil sorcerer binds Kane to his service, Kane is ordered to kill a friend. . .and not just any friend, but Ariana’s new lover, businessman and shapeshifter Max Von Gerhardt. Can mutual friend Detective Avery Lynne use her new powers to help them break the spell, or will Kane have to face the claws and fangs of the King of the Werewolves in a battle to the death?

Grim Obligations: Book 3 of the GrimFaerie Chronicles - PBACK
This is book 3 in the series and so far my favorite in terms of plot. Kane the Fae assassin with his partner Ariana a prepper witch is joined by Avery, the cop who is is more than whom she appears or thinks she is, and was introduced in the previous book. Kane stupidly handles an artifact and becomes trapped by an evil sorcerer. He has to kill the werewolf king Max in 24 hours or lose his hands and his magick powers. The sorcerer frames it as a bargain and as a Fae, Kane is bound by it. He really has no choice but to agree to kill Max or be maimed. He, Ariana and Avery set out to find out who the sorcerer is, why he wants Max dead, and force him to release Kane from the bargain. The trap "pushes" Kane, making him more bloodthirsty than he is, and it also heightens his libido which is a problem since he is attracted to and distracted by Avery. Lots of twists and turns, lots of monster fighting and killing, Ariana is compromised, and Kane has to fight off Max while trying not to kill him. Time is counting down and getting closer to the deadline to kill Max or lose Kane's hands.
Avery is a good addition to the main characters and she is sufficiently different from Ariana that they complement each other as they work together. She is also very capable and another great female role model. She and Kane lean into their similarities; they are both cops, so to speak, she as a human police officer and he as an agent for good sent by the Goddess. This is grounds for their mutual attraction, which they are both trying to figure out. The finale of the book is chock full of action and monster killing, with everyone's talents utilized to defeat the bad guy. There is a surprising reveal at the end.
Lots of scary monsters, lots of fighting and killing in various descriptive ways. While Kane is enamored of Avery, his spends time fighting off his urges in internal dialogue and there is no sex in this book. It could be very scary to a young person, so better for an older teen or an adult.
Loving the story line and character progression.
