Not all of the Faerie are sweet little Pixies. There are a few who do the dirty work on the side of the Light. Unknown protectors walk among us, gleefully using fang and claw and magick, leaving a bloody trail of vanquished evildoers in their wake. They are the GrimFaeries. If you are evil enough to try to tip the balance towards the Dark side, you might just get a visit from one. And they won't be leaving a coin under your pillow.
When Kane the Grim is tasked with finding a serial murderer in Houston, he discovers that there is much more at stake. Magick is afoot, and an evil sorcerer is behind the killings. When he rescues a witch from certain death, his new mission becomes clear: stop the bad guy before it’s too late. Teaming up with a witch who's as good with a gun as with her spells, they'll face monsters, magick, and M-16's, as they risk everything to stop the evil in its tracks before all is lost.
If you're a fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, you'll love the first tale of the GrimFaerie Chronicles, an exciting new urban fantasy from Whit McClendon, the author of the Fire of the Jidaan Trilogy!

Grim Undertakings: Book 1 of the GrimFaerie Chronicles-PBACK
Kane is a GrimFaerie, a centuries old assassin who loves his work. His job is righting what once went wrong and resetting the balance between good and evil. He gets his missions through visions from the Goddess. Ariana is a powerful witch and a prepper. She is equally adept at spells and firearms. She had a dream she would meet a Faerie. They meet on a mission to take out a killer of young women and together set out to take down billionaire Bress who is trying to attain power through evil entities. Most of the book involves their attempt to fight through Bress' evil forces, magical beings, demons and humans in his skyscraper. On the way they discover a prisoner and free him as they fight through the opposing hordes to reach Bress in his penthouse. There's a lot of description of the fights, in large part involving martial arts, which the author teaches in real life.
There is a lot of world building in this first of four books and introduction to all manner of faerie and other mythical creatures. Kane is described in his physical features and fae powers, but we don't learn much of his personality beyond that he is a psychopath. Ariana is my favorite of the pair, her character is a lot better filled out, being the more likeable of the two. I like her because she is an equal partner in the story, she is inventive and resourceful and able to take care of herself without needing to be rescued by a man. Kane and Ariana complement and help each other out of jams they find themselves in. If you like strong women who aren't bitches, you will like Ariana. She doesn't sit around moaning to be rescued.
The story line is wrapped up in this book, but does contain plot threads which I expect will be addressed in future volumes. It can be read as a stand alone story with no cliffhanger into the next book to resolve the plot. Lots of violence, some humor and no sex. I enjoyed it and will read the rest of the series.
Grim Undertakings: Book 1 of the GrimFaerie Chronicles-PBACK
The characters make me laugh and sometimes cringe. They are fun, engaging, and dangerous. Great combo! I especially love Kane (who doesn't??), but Ariana is the amazing female character I always love to read. They have a scary antagonist, and they might even get the bad guy...
Totally absorbing.
I started book one today and quickly got to page 100. Good story with some fun new ideas for Urban Fantasy. Looking forward to completing the series
